Churchill, the ante post favourite for the 2000 Guineas is still the headline showing after a dozen runners stood their ground early this week. The race goes of on Saturday at Newmarket trainer Aidan O’Brien is looking to land his eighth win at the race. If he pulls that off, most plausibly with his main charge Churchill, then he will create a bit of history for himself as he will become the most successful trainer in the history of the famous classic.
O’Brien’s last win in the race was back in 2015 with Gleneagle and he will likely have other runners going in the race as well, such as Lancaster Bomber, Peace Envoy and Spirit of Valor but none of them carry as strong of a challenge as the highly impressive Churchill does. This is the first classic of the season and last season’s champion two year old Churchill, is expected to make all of the running and all of the headlines.
Churchill’s last run saw him take a one and a quarter length victory over Lancaster Bomber at Newmarket in October last year in the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes. But of course, with the pressure of the day, he is going to have to stay focused because there are big challengers in the field, particularly from Al Wukair trained by Andre Fabre and he remains unbeaten at two and in a French trial, he crushed National Defence, a Group One winner.
Al Wukair has been trending quite strongly in the market and will go into the race off a pretty light campaign really in the build up to the 2000 Guineas. Al Wukair comes in at 4/1 third favourite for the race, with Eminent a little longer at 9/2 and there is Barney Roy separating them from the front runner at a quote of 7/2. But those are prices which are considerably bigger the Churchill who is carrying an impressive 311111 record into this one, four of the five career wins coming with jockey Ryan Moore in the hotseat.
