England’s luck in the European Championships haven’t gone all that well in the recent editions. In 2004 they edged their way through to the quarter finals where they ran into hosts Portugal.
Despite Michael Owen putting them ahead within three minutes of the start, Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men couldn’t finish the job and with the two standing a 2-2 after extra time it went to penalties, which the Portuguese won 6-5 after Darius Vasell and David Beckham had missed for England.
The Three Lions failed to qualify for Euro 2008 but when they returned to the competition in 2012 they made it back to the quarter finals where they faced Italy.
It was a long 120 minutes of England being on the back foot and offering no attacking threat in the game whatsoever as Roy Hodgson led them in an international competition for the first time. So to penalties this one went and with Ashley Young and Ashley Cole missing for England in the shootout, Italy breezed through 4-2.
So where England are involved in a knockout stage of a tournament, you can’t help have spot kicks on the back of your mind. Back England to win Euro 2016 at Betfred and if they exit the competition on a penalty shoot out, then the bookmaker will refund your lost stake on them as cash!
