It is a weekend of cup finals all over Europe and the excitement is already building at Wembley for one of them, which is the FA Cup Final. This season’s final sees London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal go head to head for the famous piece of silverware and with such a strong Cup pedigree between them, it is somewhat surprising that this will be just the second FA Cup final that these two have contested. The previous one was back in May 2002 which Arsenal won 2-0, one of the goals being that famous Ray Parlour strike from 25 yards out.
Arsenal have won five of their last five FA Cup Final appearances and they have gotten their hands on the trophy twice in the last three seasons. The Gunners have also only lost one of their last 22 FA Cup matches so have some strong, strong form. They would be the first side ever to win it 13 times if they triumph on Saturday and Arsene Wenger could collect the FA Cup for the seventh time with the club, which would make him the most successful manager in the history of the competition. Will this be his Arsenal swansong?
But Arsenal, who missed out on a top-four finish in the Premier League do have a tough game ahead of them, especially without the suspended Laurent Koscielny to hold their back line together. Chelsea have lost just one of their last twelve competitive games against Arsenal now and although they trail Arsenal 5-8 in FA Cup head to head meetings, they did win the last FA Cup clash with them, which was a semi-final affair back in 2009. With the Blues having collected the Premier League title in style this season and with them having scored 24 goals in their last seven games played, they go as favourites to collect the trophy on Saturday.
Chelsea would complete a domestic league and cup double for only the second time in their history and would join an elite club consisting of only Arsenal and Manchester United to have won the English double on more than one occasion. Chelsea have collected nine wins in their 11 major finals since Roman Abramovich took over and they have won their last four FA Cup Final appearances as well, so they have strong form going. Will they be able to add some extra shine to their brilliant season or will be Arsenal be able to save theirs by getting their hands on the famous trophy?
