The biggest night of Leicester’s season is upon them this week as they head back into UEFA Champions League action. They have broken new ground and they are in the quarter-finals for the first time ever. This, of course, is their debut season in the competition and Wednesday night they travel to the Vicente Calderon to take on the mighty Atletico Madrid, who are not going to be any kind of pushovers and the Spaniards are 2/7 odds-on for the win, leaving Leicester a massive 11/1 price.
Atletico are one of the top sides in Europe and they have won 16 of their 21 Champions League home games under boss Diego Simeone (D4 L1) and they are currently on a nine-match unbeaten streak of form at the Calderon in the competition. Overall this season, Atletico Madrid have won six of their eight Champions League games and that tops every other team left in. So they are a form team and with them having kept a clean sheet in 15 of their last 17 Champions League home games, Leicester are going to have a tough time breaking them down.
There is a little history between Leicester and Atletico Madrid actually. Two of Leicester’s three previous European campaigns were stopped by the Spaniards. Those meetings were back in the 1961/62 Cup Winners Cup and 1997/98 UEFA Cup and Leicester came out with a D1 L3 record from those four games in that sequence. It has been the stuff of dreams and rising above expectations from the Foxes this season, shaking off their indifferent domestic form to run to the final eight of the Champions League.
The Foxes did win their first away game in the competition this season but they have gone D1 L2 since, losing their last two away from the King Power in Europe. The Foxes are also the lowest scoring side of the eight quarter-finalists and you pit that against the mighty defence that Atletico Madrid have at their disposal and this could be a tough night for the Premier League side out in Spain. At the end of the day, can you write off Leicester after their heroics against Sevilla in the last round?
