There is another big round of La Liga action coming from Spain this weekend and topping the bill is Sunday’s clash at the Vicente Calderon between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. This will be a momentous occasion as Atletico will be moving on to a new home so this is the last time that they will be hosting the mighty Barcelona in a league match. So it is something of a special occasion on Sunday and you can be assured that the atmosphere will be ramped up.
On the pitch, Atletico need to find a way to snap some poor head to head form against Barcelona, not having beaten them in any of their last 13 La Liga contests (D3 L10). They have lost five of their last six at home against the powerful Catalans as well (D1) so Atleti certainly aren’t carrying the form. However, they have won their last three in a row in the Spanish top flight home and away, and they are on a four match winning streak at the Calderon.
They could be catching Barcelona at just the right time as well because the Catalans have struggled in recent performances. There was their heavy loss at PSG in the UEFA Champions League and only a late penalty gave them three points in their last La Liga match against Leganes who are firmly rooted in the bottom half of the table. So it hasn’t been overly impressive stuff from Barcelona but of course, they have the quality individuals to get them out of trouble.
Lionel Messi has only scored more career goals against Sevilla than he has against Atletico Madrid and he has netted eleven goals against Atletico at the Calderon during his career. Then there is Luis Suarez who has scored five goals in his last six games against Atletico Madrid. While their performances haven’t been there, Barcelona have managed to put together a 16 match unbeaten streak in La Liga and they will be hoping that they become just the second team after Real Madrid this season to land a league win at Calderon.
