A London derby between Tottenham and Chelsea is usually a feisty enough affair to get stuck into but when the two rivals from the capital meet on Wednesday night there is extra involved. The stakes are a little bit higher as Chelsea would be able to equal Arsenal’s long-standing record of 14 consecutive Premier League wins. So the Blues face a tough trip to White Hart Lane to equal that record and of course, Spurs will be in the mood to spoil the party of this season’s champions-elect.
Chelsea have been streaking away at the top of the table and with Liverpool dropping points in a draw against Sunderland on Monday the Blues have a further chance to stretch their lead. So this is an important game for the Blues even without all the talk of them equalling the record. They have the more important business of winning the league title to deal with this season. No-one has been able to stop them in their last thirteen league matches and Stoke were the latest to suffer against them on the weekend as the Blues won 4-2.
Can Chelsea survive a trip to White Hart Lane? Spurs have been coming into their own lately as they have won their last four league games on the bounce and they have netted four goals in each of their last two games. So they have caught fire at the right time and they can haul themselves into the top four with a victory in this one. This is a great time for the Lilywhites to step up and prove themselves, and they are unbeaten on home soil in the league this season too.
Chelsea are 9/5 to land the win, with Spurs going off at 7/4. Chelsea have failed to win any of their last three games at White Hart Lane now and they may just fall short of equalling that record unless they can pull something special out of their hat in this tough fixture. If they do win, and they did beat Spurs 2-1 back at Stamford Bridge in November, then they will open up a seven point lead at the top of the pile.
